New mailbag podcast: Why Jarren Duran’s toe injury should worry Red Sox fans

The Red Sox placed outfielder Jarren Duran on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after he sprained his toe scaling the wall trying to rob a home run Sunday afternoon against the Yankees. On the most recent episode of MassLive’s Fenway Rundown podcast, co-hosts Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam dug into the injury — and many other topics, mostly via listener questions submitted on Twitter.

Here’s what they had to say… You can listen to the full podcast here and subscribe on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

COTILLO: “We’ve criticized the Red Sox on the show and plenty of times in casual conversation for downplaying and underplaying injuries when they first happen. And then kind of, I don’t know, some sort of difference in tone happens over the next couple days usually.

“Sunday afternoon, Jarren Duran leaves with a little bit of a toe issue trying to scale the wall. ‘No big deal,’ says Alex Cora. Monday? ‘Yeah, we’ll keep him out for the day. Probably will avoid the IL.’ Tuesday, he goes in the IL, all of the sudden he’s in a walking boot, and they’re waiting on more imaging.

“I think it’s ominous. I do. And I don’t know for sure that it’s anything serious, but we’ve seen this kind of playbook before. Downplay until you drop the bomb. The Red Sox don’t need that right now because Duran’s been, perhaps their most dynamic player throughout the season, but It just feels like if it was something minor, they would’ve come out and known that by this point.”

MCADAM: “And the concerning thing is when you’re talking about a toe injury, you only need to look at Aaron Judge and how long he missed. Now, I’m not saying that they’re exactly the same or that he’s going to miss the couple of months that Judge did. But it is a reminder that this is unlikely to be just 10 days or 15 days on the IL and he is back and contributing by the start of the next road trip.

“It could well be longer and particularly when you start thinking about how Duran impacts the game, it obviously revolves around his speed and athleticism and if all of a sudden he can’t put a lot of weight there, can’t run, has to alter his running stride. That’s ominous for what they could expect to get out of Jarren Duran here in the final month and a half.”
