New England day trip: How to spend a day on this island destination spot

Looking to find your next New England day trip? Check out Block Island — a small island located off the southern coast of Rhode Island.

While summer may be winding down, good weather is still holding up on the island, making for a day full of festivities before the chilly weather sets in.

Those looking to head over from the mainland can arrive to the ferry that runs out of Point Judith in Narragansett, Rhode Island. While now in the off season, the ferry is not sending as many rides out to Block Island like its summer schedule.

But, you can check its website to find the right departure time for you. Options include the traditional one hour ferry or the 30 minute high speed ferry. There are also ferries that go out of Newport, Rhode Island, and New London, Connecticut.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll dock at Old Harbor on the island, shuffle off the ferry and can officially start your day.

Grab an early lunch at one of the many restaurants or bars scattered across the island like Mohegan Restaurant and Bar.

You can also spend time checking out block island shops, which are endless. The island holds everything from beach wear, antiques, clothes and more.

If you need a chance to rest, stop by Ballard’s Beach Resort, which is filled with live music, drinks, food, all with a view of the beach. You can also rent private cabanas on the beach.

If you are looking to make the most of your time, consider renting a moped, which you can take around the whole island to sightsee.

Some popular spots to drive to are the South East Lighthouse and the Mohegan bluffs. The Mohegan Bluffs are large cliffs about 150 feet high. To get to the bottom of the bluffs, guests will have to walk down 141 steps of stairs.

Once you’ve made it all the way down to the beach check out the area by sifting through its rocks and sand, before climbing back all the way to the top.

To wind down your day, take a leisurely strolls on Water Street, browsing through more shops, grabbing dinner and taking the last ferry off the island.
