More than 500 athletes from over 50 schools across Massachusetts flocked to Natick high school on Wednesday morning to compete for the 2025 MIAA Unified Track and Field Championship.
According to the MIAA Associate Director Pete Smith, the day was a resounding success.
“I saw so much positivity from the competing teams and from the fans alike,” Smith said. “I saw a lot of fun, I saw a lot of smiling faces. It’s just such a positive atmosphere.”
Perhaps the biggest smiles came from those competing for the host school, Natick, which came away with the day’s highest honors.
For the third year in a row, the Natick Unified Track team took home the Division I championship, scoring 213 points overall — 55 points more than the second-place finisher, Wahconah.
Natick had a strong showing with multiple first-place finishes. Hussein Mohammed recorded a time of 18.88 to win first place in the Tier 5 100-meter dash, barely edging out Plymouth’s Aaron Greenlaw at 18.94.
Evan Mann got first place honors in the Tier 1 javelin throwing competition while teammate William Fair beat the field in the Tier 3 800-meter run.
Natick also took home first place in the Tier 1 4×100 meter relays and third in the Tier 1 4×400 meter relays to cap off an all-around strong performance.
Even more special is that the Redhawks got to take home another championship on their home turf.
“Natick has hosted the event for a number of years now, and they just do an incredible job with their staff and volunteers and planning,” Smith said. “Just doing all the work behind the scenes to help create an event that’s going to be a positive experience for everyone involved.”
Sandwich takes home D II title
Despite only having two individual first-place finishers, the Sandwich unified track squad took home the Division II title on Wednesday.
Faith Foy had a strong individual performance for Sandwich, winning first place in the Tier 4 long jump and second place in the Tier 1 400-meter dash with a time of 1:57.18.
Madison Scott finished fourth in the long jump, but had her best showing with a first-place finish in the Tier 2 400-meter dash.
“The volunteers who are there are there supporting the students in each of the events, helping them get to where they need to be, helping the officials, staging the relays” Smith said. “It’s a lot of great teamwork that makes this event possible.”
Three students leave with multiple first place finishes
Despite their teams not winning first, three different athletes left Natick with multiple first place finishes, all in the Division II bracket.
Carver’s Jon Demmons won both the Tier 6 shot put event and Tier 6 100-meter dash, the latter with a time of 16.97.
Nicholas Silva from Joseph Case finished with first place nods in the Tier 8 long jump and Tier 3 800-meter run. Silva also had the fastest 800-meter run of any tier in D II with a time of 2:31.52.
Duxbury’s Ronan Donovan won the Tier 6 long jump competition and the Tier 2 800-meter run. While Donovan barely edged out his opponent in the long jump, he won the 800-meter by over half a minute.
However, Donovan’s strong performance did help his school take home the silver medal. Duxbury ended the meet with 71 total points, 15 points behind the first place Sandwich team.
