N.Y. police officer dies from cancer resulting from service at 9/11

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. — A former Nassau County Police Department officer has died as a result of cancer from serving at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terror attacks, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Officer Philip Schifini, 63, served with the Nassau County Police Department for 28 years, according to the page.

“Police Officer Philip Schifini was a hero who responded to the World Trade Center during 9/11. As a result of this bravery and dedication to service, Philip tragically contracted cancer from the time spent at Ground Zero and has succumbed to the cancer,” the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association said in a statement. “We send our condolences to his family and friends as we continue to carry out our promise to #neverforget those who sacrificed their lives and continue to battle illness from that horrific day.”

The LASD stated that the deputy was relieved of duty without pay and that his actions were “completely contrary” to the department’s values and standards
