NEWARK, N.J. — Two police officers were shot in Newark Friday night and one was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

The officers were shot at 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret Street in Newark, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The intersection includes a local elementary school, a church and a fast food restaurant a few blocks from the Passaic River .

Both officers were taken to University Hospital in Newark.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said his office is “closely monitoring” the shooting.

“Our law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect our communities, and tonight is a painful reminder of the depth of the sacrifices they make,” Platkin said in a statement.

“Please keep the entire Newark Police Department and the families of our officers in your thoughts as we pray for both officers shot in the line of duty tonight,” Platkin said.

Gov. Phil Murphy also shared his concern on social media.

“This is a rapidly developing situation,” Murphy said on X, formerly Twitter. “Please pray for these officers, their families, and all our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.”
