BOSTON — The Bruins have hit rock bottom.
Things got worse for Boston on Tuesday when it dropped its ninth straight game in its 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals at TD Garden.
Jeremy Swayman suffered his sixth straight loss and hasn’t earned a win since March 11 against the Florida Panthers. Going into Tuesday’s game, Swayman was 0-5-0 with an .831 save percentage. The goalie has struggled at times this season — his first as the team’s No. 1 goalie — which is a 180 from how he played last year.
“It’s been challenging. Really challenging,” Swayman said. “I’m grateful for that challenge, the good nights, the bad nights. But some of that I have to grow with. I have to keep my head up. I owe it to myself and this team. … I’m my own worst critic, and that’s something that I’ve battled and will continue to. But that’s something I can grow from.”
This year has presented Swayman with new challenges. He missed all of training camp and the preseason while he and the Bruins worked out a contract extension. At times he’s looked like his 2023-24 self and other times he lets in goals he normally would save. Swayman has already played a career-high 53 games, but interim coach Joe Sacco said in March that he wasn’t worried about the goalie’s workload.
Nothing seems to be going right for the Bruins save for David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie’s offensive production. But two goalsf from Pastrnak wasn’t enough to get Boston back in the win column.
The loss also put the Bruins at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
The Bruins’ now travel to Montreal to take on the Canadiens, who hold the second Wild Card spot and will be trying to pull away in the playoff race.
