After back-to-back losses, Morgan Geekie put the short-handed Bruins on his back.
Geekie scored both Boston goals, including the game-winner 2:27 into overtime, to lift the Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Kings on Friday at Crypto.com Arena.
The Bruins, who are still missing several key players, finish the California portion of their road trip on Sunday against the Sharks in San Jose.
Facing the franchise he used to work for, Marco Sturm split up Geekie and David Pastrnak to open the game. Geekie played with Marat Khusnutdinov and Alex Steeves, while Pavel Zacha centered Pastrnak and Matej Blumel in an all-Czech line.
Steeves showed some early chemistry and earned an assist on Geekie’s first goal, which broke a scoreless tie, 8:01 into the third period.
Joel Armia broke up Jeremy Swayman’s shutout bid with 6:57 left to make it 1-1 until overtime.
Geekie and Pastrnak reunited for the 3-on-3. On the rush, Pastrnak fed Geekie in the right wing circle and Geekie ripped it by Darcy Kuemper for the game-winner.
The two goals gave Geekie 16 this season, tying him with Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon for most in the NHL. He’s on pace to score 57 goals this season.
