More than a dozen beaches closed across Massachusetts on Friday

On what is expected to be a warm, but pleasant Friday in Massachusetts, more than a dozen beaches across the state are closed for swimming, primarily due to excess bacteria.

In all, 15 beaches were closed across the Bay State on Friday as of 8 a.m.

The closures spanned from Ashby near the New Hampshire border to Boston in Eastern Massachusetts to beaches on Cape Cod. Of the 15 beaches closed in the state as of Tuesday morning, almost all — 12 of the 15 — were attributed to an excess of bacteria in the water.

The remaining closures were attributed to harmful cyanobacteria blooms and “other” reasons. Walden Pond, for example, is closed due to construction work on a new $6 million bathhouse.

In Boston, Constitution Beach in East Boston was closed due to excess bacteria, the same reason given for the closures of two beaches in Winthrop.

“If a beach is closed, do not swim or enter the water at that location to avoid risk of illness,” the dashboard warns.
