Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel thought they’d be together forever. Or, at the very least, long enough to wear the same major league uniform and share the same clubhouse and dugout.
After all, they were each drafted high by the Red Sox in three successive seasons — Mayer in the 2021 first round, Anthony in the second round of the 2022 draft and Teel a year later, a first-round pick in 2023. They got to know one another in the Instructional League, in the organization’s annual Rookie Development program and, eventually, playing together for several affiliates in the Red Sox’ minor league system.
