SUMMIT, Miss. — An officer was shot and killed while conducting a traffic checkpoint, WLBT reported.

According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred on Aug. 8 as Summit Police Department officers were conducting traffic checkpoints.
As a car approached the checkpoint, a passenger fired a gun at the officers, fatally wounding Officer Troy Floyd, according to the report. Floyd had over 20 years of experience in various law enforcement positions, according to a statement from the neighboring McComb Police Department on Facebook.
Two McComb police officers arrived at the scene and encountered the vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire, according to the report. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the suspect was killed.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently gathering evidence regarding the incident.
