SUMMIT, Miss. — An officer was shot and killed while conducting a traffic checkpoint, WLBT reported.

“The Denver Police Department is appalled by the subject of the messages, which are contradictory to the mission and values of the Department,” the PD stated

Butler Township officers expressed frustration with the Secret Service for failing to post someone on the roof, with one officer saying he advised them to do so days before

The amendment requires the city to allot 25% of its budget to the state-run department after a similar amendment was struck down by the state Supreme Court in 2022

“I’m excited that it’s finally been … approved, but a little bit frustrated that it’s taken this much effort for them to finally get it,” said Charlotte FOP president Daniel Redford

According to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred on Aug. 8 as Summit Police Department officers were conducting traffic checkpoints.

As a car approached the checkpoint, a passenger fired a gun at the officers, fatally wounding Officer Troy Floyd, according to the report. Floyd had over 20 years of experience in various law enforcement positions, according to a statement from the neighboring McComb Police Department on Facebook.

Two McComb police officers arrived at the scene and encountered the vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire, according to the report. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the suspect was killed.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently gathering evidence regarding the incident.
