MassLive earned three Top 10 awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) as the organization announced the finalists for its national sports journalism contest. Columnist Matt Vautour won his fourth Top 10 award in two years.
Vautour, who joined the MassLive sports section in 2018, finished in the Top 10 in the B Division for a short feature about Pierre Rouzier — an Amherst, Mass. doctor who was working the 2013 Boston Marathon when the annual event was bombed.
“I’m honored to be recognized. It means more because of how much this topic means to our region,” Vautour said. “I appreciate Pierre’s trust to tell his story and MassLive’s emphasis on producing good journalism.”

Vautour’s award-winning short feature took readers through what Rouzier encountered April 15, 2013 and how the events of the day changed the way he sees himself.
Last year, Vautour finished in the Top 10 in C Division for columns, long feature and short feature writing. MassLive moved up to the B Division in the 2023 contest.
MassLive also earned Top 10 awards in projects and digital.
The five pieces of content submitted for digital include Lauren Campbell‘s TikTok regarding a grieving Bruins fan’s viral moment on Hockey Fights Cancer night, Chris Berry‘s video of the Pope Francis state hockey game-winner, Meredith Perri‘s Facebook Live interview with MIAA head Bob Baldwin, Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam‘s video interview podcast with David Ortiz and Karen Guregian‘s interview with Devin McCourty.
Guregian and Vautour were also part of MassLive’s Top 10 award in projects, where they, along with columnist Sean McAdam and New England Patriots beat reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels, produced a 10-part series on team owner Robert Kraft’s candidacy for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The APSE contest is judged by sports editors and journalists from across the country. The organization will honor contest winners during its summer conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, in June.
