Work crews closed two lanes of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Charlton for emergency repairs on a bridge Monday, officials said, as they urged drivers to avoid the area.
The lanes were closed around 1 p.m. on the highway’s eastbound side near mile marker 82.3 to fix the bridge carrying traffic over Brookfield Road.
Drivers were advised to expect delays, reduce speed and use caution as they traveled past state Department of Transportation (DOT) work crews.
The highway had fully reopened by about 2:30 p.m.
The bridge crossing is located about 4 miles east of the busy Mass. Pike and Interstate 84 interchange.
Later Monday afternoon, the Mass. Pike was reduced to one lane on the westbound side after a crash about 9 miles west of the bridge repair, according to MassDOT.
Traffic data showed heavy backups heading west in the roughly 9 miles of the Mass. Pike between I-84 and Route 19, near the state DOT’s maintenance depot in Warren.
