Massachusetts weather: Be wary of dense fog and black ice Tuesday morning

Drivers in Massachusetts should proceed with caution as they travel across the state Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service warns of dense fog that will persist through most of the morning, as well as black ice in Central and Western Massachusetts.

Most of Massachusetts is under a dense fog warning until 10 a.m. The weather service said it could impact visibility as far as a quarter mile in front of cars. It recommends that drivers slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of room ahead of them in case they need to stop unexpectedly.

The weather service also warns of patchy black ice in Central and Western Massachusetts Tuesday morning. It recommends that drivers use caution if traveling, especially on bridges and overpasses, as roads that look wet may actually have a thin layer of ice. The threat will lessen beginning at 9 a.m. as temperatures warm, the weather service said.

The rest of the day is expected to be mild, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s in Eastern and Central Massachusetts and temperatures in the high 40s with mostly cloudy skies in Western Massachusetts, according to the weather service. Lows overnight across the state should be in the upper 30s and low 40s.

The Berkshires have a 50% chance of rain beginning Tuesday night, while the rest of the state likely won’t see rain until Wednesday afternoon. That rain is expected to stick around until Saturday morning, and higher elevations may see some snow mixed in that morning.

Meanwhile, the weather service predicts highs in the low 50s and upper 40s on Wednesday and Thursday, and then the low to mid 40s on Friday. Lows overnight should start in the low 40s before dropping to the mid and then lower 40s.

The weekend is expected to be clear and cool, with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s, according to the weather service. Lows overnight are expected to dip into the low to mid 20s.
