Massachusetts resident lost more than $100,000 in home repair scam

A Massachusetts resident lost more than $100,000 in a home repair scam run by two men in their 20s, according to the Maynard Police Department.

Hughie Antony O’Donoghue, 24, of Wayland, and Michael Nevin, 21, of Wayland, were both charged with larceny over $1,200 from a victim 60 or older, conspiracy and unlicensed home improvement contractor.

Police said the fake contractors would charge residents for home repairs and continue to charge them larger amounts of money without completing the work. They also weren’t licensed to do the repairs.

At least one resident spent more than $100,000 in the scam, police said.

O’Donoghue and Nevin were arrested on Tuesday. They had also been wanted on arrest warrants out of Ireland, police said.

They were arraigned in Concord District Court and each held on $15,000 bail. They were also required to surrender their passports and wear GPS monitors.

“Maynard Police would also like to remind residents and community members to stay vigilant and research companies before hiring and paying someone for repairs,” police said in a statement.
