A Massachusetts woman who officials believe slipped from a scenic overlook in New Hampshire and fell more than 50 feet was rescued Saturday afternoon and is expected to survive her injuries.
Meghan Mason, of Braintree, was seriously injured when she tumbled from a viewpoint on Mt. Pierce, a 4,310-foot summit about 4 miles southwest of Mt. Washington, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
The department was notified around 3:30 p.m. Saturday that a hiker had fallen from the overlook “between 50–100 feet,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.
Fish and Game conservation officers located Mason on “precarious” and “rugged” terrain on a spur trail about 0.6 miles up the Crawford Path, a hiking route from the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center to Mount Pierce.
Due to the rough terrain, officers contacted rescuers from the Mountain Rescue Service, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team and Twin Mountain Fire and Rescue for assistance to carry Mason down the mountain. The group ferried Mason to the trailhead, arriving just after 7 p.m. to a waiting ambulance.
Mason was brought to Littleton Regional Hospital with injuries described as “serious but non-life-threatening.”
