Mass. weather: Snow, dangerous wind chills, frostbite warning across state

If you’re heading out to watch the big game on Sunday, bundle up.

Massachusetts is in store for another round of extreme winter weather this weekend, with snow on Saturday ushering in an arctic front that will send temperatures plummeting to dangerously cold levels Saturday night through Sunday.

Friday will kick off with chilly but mild conditions, with afternoon temperatures reaching the high 20s throughout the state. Snow is expected to move in overnight, according to the National Weather Service, leaving up to an inch or so by the time residents wake up on Saturday.

Snowfall will continue through Saturday into the evening hours, with expected accumulation of 4 inches in Boston, 3 to 4 inches on Cape Cod & the Islands, 2 to 3 inches in Central Massachusetts and 1 to 2 inches in Western Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow is expected to wrap up Saturday night between 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., just as frigid temperatures and high winds will move in across the state. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for Central and Western Massachusetts from 6 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday, while the eastern part of the state will be under a Cold Weather Watch.

The Berkshires will see a low temperature of minus 9 degrees on Saturday night, with a wind chill value of minus 28 degrees. Worcester and Springfield will drop to minus 1, with a accompanying wind chill readings around minus 20 degrees.

Boston will stay above zero, with an expected low of 4 degrees, but the wind chill will make it feel like minus 12 degrees. The same goes for Cape Cod & the Islands, which will bottom out around 12 degrees with a wind chill of minus 3.

The National Weather Service cautions that such conditions could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes. Anyone who has to go outside is urged to dress in layers, including a hat, gloves and face mask.

Sunday is expected to bring sun and clear skies, but afternoon temperatures will only reach the mid teens across the state. As the sun goes down, sub-zero temperatures are forecast in Central and Western Massachusetts, while Boston will get as low as 2 degrees, with wind chills again reaching dangerous levels.
