Mass. weather: Showers, thunderstorms expected for Sunday, Aug. 17

Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across Massachusetts on Sunday, Aug. 17, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather events are expected to occur during the afternoon and evening as a cold front crosses the region.

“Cooler/below normal temperatures follow for much of the upcoming work week with comfortable humidity,” the service reports. “Dry weather dominates next week … but some wet weather is possible in the late Tuesday through Thursday time frame.”

In the Berkshires, the stormy weather will mainly occur after 5 p.m. But throughout Sunday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 83 degrees.

Meanwhile, isolated showers, scattered storms and thunderstorms are expected to pick up after 3 p.m. in Franklin County. Otherwise, the weather is expected to be sunny and hot with temperatures reaching 96 degrees.

The same holds true for Springfield, with a high near 92 degrees.

Worcester could see isolated showers after 2 p.m. with hot and sunny weather before then and a high near 91 degrees.

Boston could also see scattered showers in the afternoon after 3 p.m., the National Weather Service said. But Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 91.

The Cape and Islands won’t see rain until after 9 p.m. Otherwise, residents will have sunny weather with a high near 82 degrees.

Looking further ahead, Massachusetts residents should be alert for hurricane Erin, which has become a Category 5 hurricane.

“Large swells from distant Hurricane Erin may affect the local waters as early as Wednesday and linger into Friday,” the National Weather Service warns. “This should result in dangerous surf and rip currents, and possibly small craft advisory level seas.”
