Winter weather is returning to Massachusetts, with freezing conditions expected to begin the day on Tuesday, followed by snow in the forecast for Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for the entire state Tuesday morning, warning that freezing drizzle could make for icy conditions and a slippery commute. The statement notes that untreated surfaces and elevated bridges could especially become slick and urges drivers to use caution.
Temperatures will warm throughout the day and settle in the upper 30s across the state, topping out at 37 degrees in Boston, 39 degrees in Worcester, 40 degrees in Springfield and Pittsfield and 36 degrees on Cape Cod & the Islands.
Patchy fog and light precipitation could return in the early evening but is expected to clear up by 7 p.m. Overnight temperatures will be just below freezing across the state, dropping to the low 30s and upper 20s.
Wednesday will bring temperatures in the upper 30s and a high chance of afternoon rain for most of Massachusetts. As temperatures drop throughout the evening, that rain could turn to snow, but the National Weather Service expects little or no accumulation for most of the state.
Temperatures will return to the upper 30s to low 40s on Thursday, and another round of snow showers could be in store over the weekend, with the chance of precipitation hovering around 50% for Friday and Saturday.
