Mass. weather: Cold temps, snowy weekend ahead

Get ready for cold weather, as Friday will see wind chill readings drop below zero in some parts of Massachusetts, followed by scattered snow throughout the weekend.

Temperatures will drop in a big way Friday as a cold front moves through New England, according to the National Weather Service. Temps will range in the mid to upper 20s across Central and Western Massachusetts, while Boston and Cape Cod & the Islands should see highs in the low 30s.

The state will be hit by high winds throughout the day, according to the weather service, with consistent winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. The wind chill will begin in single digits in much of the state, hitting a low of -3 in the Berkshires on Friday morning. The winds should subside in the evening, with the strongest gusts dying out by 5 p.m.

Saturday night will bring a chance of snow in Central and Western Massachusetts, beginning around 11 p.m. in Springfield and after midnight in Worcester. An inch or two of accumulation is possible in those areas, while the National Weather Service forecasts scattered rain overnight for Boston and Cape Cod & the Islands.

Sunday brings more snow in the afternoon, with Boston possibly receiving 1 to 3 inches after 4 p.m. Central and Western Massachusetts could see 2 to 4 inches, while Cape Cod & the Islands will start out as rain before turning into snow later in the evening, ending up with 1 to 3 inches.

As for the Patriots forecast, the National Weather Service expects the temperature in Foxborough to be around 35 degrees for the 3 p.m. kickoff of New England’s playoff game against the Houston Texans, possibly dropping below freezing by the end of the contest. Light winds will make the wind chill a non-factor, but there is a chance of snow in the area in the morning and likely snowfall around 4 p.m., with 2 to 4 inches of accumulation possible.
