Mass. shop known for its discounted baked goods closing this weekend

A decades-old shop in Western Massachusetts where customers picked up bread and other baked goods for a bargain will shut down this weekend.

Freihofer’s Bakery Outlet, located at 1964 Boston Post in Wilbraham, will officially close its doors on Saturday. It is one of only two such outlets in the state. The other is in North Attleborough.

“We made the difficult decision to close the Wilbraham Bakery Outlet on January 27, 2024,” a statement from Bimbo Bakeries USA, the store’s parent company, reads. “We appreciate all of our associates who worked at the Wilbraham store and are taking steps to help ease them through this transition.”

The company did not provide a reason as to why the business is closing. Customers disheartened over the news of Freihofer’s closure shared their sentiments in the Wilbraham MA, Open Forum Facebook group.

“My condolences to the staff who will be losing their jobs, and to the community which will be losing a great place to buy mark-down breads, muffins [and] rolls,” one person wrote. “I have visited there weekly over the past decades and almost always bought something…I’m very sorry to see them go.”

“Buying bread there for many years. It has saved us a lot of money,” another person said. “Can’t imagine having to pay retail now for bread.”

According to store staff, Freihofer’s opened on Boston Road about 39 years ago and had changed ownership a few times. The store is having a final sale on products.

The only other Freihofer’s in Massachusetts is in North Attleborough. Bimbo Bakeries did not say if this location will also close.

Bimbo Bakeries said customers can find their favorite baked goods by using its online product locater.
