NORTON — Megan Khang has one goal in mind for the FM Championship.
“Hopefully play better,” Khang told MassLive at TPC Boston.
The Rockland native and FM ambassador will play in the second annual FM Championship. She finished 35th last year.
“I think the first season was the scariest. You never know what to expect,” Khang said.
Khang still resides in Massachusetts and is able to stay at home during the course of the tournament. She doesn’t necessarily consider it an advantage, but rather a comfort because there’s a sense of normalcy to her routine.
Even though it’s comfortable to be in a familiar area during such a big tournament, that doesn’t mean it comes without pressure.
“I’m gonna feel a little pressure with the home crowd, but it’s something that I don’t really want to look at as pressure,” she said. “But just (as something) like I’m excited to have this opportunity again to play in front of everyone.
“There’s nothing like playing in front of your home state.”
Khang heard plenty of cheers last year from the crowd throughout last year’s tournament. She frequently stopped to sign autographs and often saluted those in attendance with her club.
The cheers, and the 25,000-plus people who came out to take in the FM Championship in 2024, is a testament to the growth of women’s professional golf.
“I wasn’t around when Massachusetts had professional women’s golf,” Khang said. “I remember coming here as a child, a teenager, watching the men play. But to be able to kind of almost do a full circle where the LPGA comes back and we get to bring women’s golf back to the New England area, it’s a huge honor.”
The 27-year-old joined the LPGA Tour in 2016. Since then, she has 92 career top-five finishes and won the 2023 CPKC Women’s Open over Ko Jin-young in a playoff.
Khang doesn’t want to put too much pressure on herself going into the FM Championship, but still has the ultimate goal in mind.
“I hope to raise the trophy at the end of the week,” she said. “But really (I’m) just going to take it in day by day because I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself where it’s scary.”
