Mass. man sentenced to life in prison for 2021 murder of Mashpee woman, DA says

A 36-year-old man pleaded guilty on Friday to the strangling death of a Mashpee woman in 2021, Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois’ office announced.

Cleber Mariano pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Barnstable Superior Court. Mariano was previously indicted by the Barnstable County grand jury on Dec. 2, 2021, Galibois’s office said in a statement.

Falmouth police initially received a 911 call asking for a wellness check on Feb. 8, 2021. Mariano had sent several texts and phone calls to people suggesting he was suicidal.

Police arrived at Cape Wind Waterfront Resort to find Danielle Taylor, of Mashpee, unconscious and lying on the floor. Mariano was found on the bed in a pool of blood, Galibois’ office said. Both were taken to Falmouth Hospital, where Taylor died. Mariano had a large laceration on his neck and right hand, in an attempt to kill himself.

An autopsy determined she died from strangulation, Galibois’ office said.

On Friday, Judge Mark C. Gildea sentenced Mariano to life in prison with the possibility of parole, Galibois’ office said.
