A Cape Cod man died Tuesday afternoon after the car he was driving crashed on the side of the road in Yarmouth, according to Yarmouth police.
Multiple 911 callers reported the single-car crash on Highbank Road near Coveview Drive shortly after 1:15 p.m., Yarmouth police said in a press release. Officers found the overturned car in the wood line already engulfed in flames.
The driver — a 21-year-old South Yarmouth man — was still inside the car when officers arrived, but was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, police said. Officers rushed to help him, but were unable to free him due to the heavy flames, which they struggled to extinguish.
Yarmouth firefighters arrived at the scene soon after and took over efforts to douse the fire, police said. Despite first responders’ efforts, the driver — whose name police are currently withholding — died of his injuries.
Three Yarmouth police officers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis to be treated for smoke inhalation following the crash, police said.
Yarmouth police and a regional Cape Cod police crash reconstruction unit are still investigating the crash, police said. Investigators ask that anyone with information about the incident call police at 508-775-0445.
“The Yarmouth Police ask the community to keep the family of the victim, their loved ones, and responding first responders in their thoughts during this difficult time,” the police department wrote in the release.
