Mass. man arrested in connection with ‘disturbing’ scarecrow display

A 56-year-old Massachusetts man was arrested and charged in connection with a “disturbing” scarecrow display in Concord.

On Sept. 22, Concord Police said they responded to the area of Monument Square for a report of a sign directed toward the Superintendent of the Concord and Concord-Carlisle Regional school districts.

Over the next several weeks, Concord Police responded to and investigated multiple reports of signs that were placed around town directed at the superintendent.

The signs were part of scarecrows that displayed messages such as “Fire liar hunter,” “Muskets for musk?” “The hatch for hunter!” and “Hate, waste, bullying, higher taxes,” according to WCVB.

Tracey Marano, Concord-Carlisle Regional School District School Committee chair, and Concord Public Schools School Committee Chair Andrew Herchek, called the displays “disturbing and uncivil” in a statement.

“The Concord and Concord-Carlisle School Committees stand fully with Superintendent Hunter. She is a committed leader who continues to serve our students, staff and families with professionalism and care,” the statement read.

Following a “lengthy investigation,” John Grace, of Concord, was arrested at his North Branch Road home Tuesday morning. He was charged with violation of harassment prevention order. The superintendent had filed for and was granted a harassment protection order against Grace in May.
