Mass. high school basketball player kicked off team for spitting on opposing player, school says

An Old Rochester Regional High School boys basketball player has been kicked off his team for spitting on an opposing player during a game Monday night, according to school officials.

On Tuesday, district administrators were made aware of an incident that took place during the Division 3 Final Four basketball game on March 11 in which a player from Old Rochester High spit on a Pittsfield High School player, Old Rochester Regional School District Superintendent Michael Nelson said in a press release Wednesday. School officials have investigated the incident and confirmed what happened, he said.

“Old Rochester Regional High School has identified the player involved. He is no longer a member of the Old Rochester Boys Varsity Basketball Team and has since taken responsibility for his actions,” Nelson wrote in the release.

The student will face disciplinary action in accordance with school policies, Nelson said. The district has also contacted both Pittsfield Public Schools and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).

“The Old Rochester Regional School District and MA Superintendency Union #55 administration express our deepest regrets to the Pittsfield team and school community at large,” Nelson wrote in the release. “We place the highest value on sportsmanship and will continue to expect the best from our student-athletes as leaders in our school communities.”

Old Rochester Regional School District serves the towns of Rochester, Mattapoisett and Marion.
