Mass. elementary school student hit by car after getting off bus, reports say

A Brockton elementary school student was struck by a car while getting off a school bus Monday afternoon, according to The Boston Globe.

The Hancock Elementary School student was hit by a passing car as they got off at a bus stop near Manthala George Jr. Elementary School on Colonel Bell Jr. Drive around 3:30 p.m., the newspaper reported. The student was medically evaluated at a health care center after the crash and is not believed to have been seriously injured.

“We are grateful that this incident did not result in a tragedy,” Acting Superintendent James Cobbs told the Globe in a statement. “We urge all drivers to exercise extreme caution around schools and bus stops to ensure the safety of students.”

Officials said the bus’ red lights and stop sign were activated at the time of the crash, Boston 25 News reported. Brockton police responded to the crash, and the driver was cited at the scene.

Hancock Elementary School teaches students in grades pre-K through fifth. It is unclear how old the student was.

No further information about the crash has been released.
