Mass. could see temps go up before soaking rain drenches the region possibly midweek

One more frigid day this week before temperatures are expected to jump and resemble last week’s high temperatures, with a chance of some soaking rain hitting between Wednesday and Thursday.

Overnight lows on Monday are likely to be in the teens rather than single digits, though warm air advection should leave conditions slightly warmer than Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Daytime highs should see an increase on Tuesday, with forecasters anticipating temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees warmer than Monday. This should mean temperatures in the high 30s and 40s. Such an increase is a result of a cold front departing the region, leaving winds between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 mph.

Highs should largely be below 50 degrees, with Boston seeing a high of 48, Worcester reaching 47 and Springfield hitting 49, the weather service said in a post on X.

But those temperatures should rise further on Wednesday when a system from the Midwest heads for the region and douses it in soaking rain, forecasters said. Rain totals are expected to be right over 1 inch, which is likely to fall by late morning in the west and then move to the east by the afternoon.

While forecasters say that the risk of flooding is low, they will continue to monitor conditions before they develop ahead of the storm, forecasters said. Winds could also be high late Wednesday into Thursday, at between 29 and 40 mph, followed by another gusty round between Thursday and Friday. This round of heavy wind could prompt an advisory, with gusts between 40 and 51 mph.

This is when highs could get close to 60 degrees, but forecasters said they are not focused on any potential record-breaking temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees happening by Thursday afternoon.

Worcester could see a high of 54 degrees on Wednesday and 56 on Thursday; Boston could hit 57 on Wednesday, 58 on Thursday; 52 in Gloucester on both days; and the Islands are likely to see temperatures between 48 and 49 degrees.

“Rain ends as dry air advects in to the system by early Thursday, perhaps a nice afternoon with breaks in the clouds and mild temperatures ahead of a strong cold front,” forecasters said. “Friday is colder with potential for stronger to damaging wind gusts. More quiet conditions possible into the upcoming weekend.”
