Mass. could see record warmth on Halloween. Here’s what to expect

The biggest shock Massachusetts residents encounter this Halloween may not be a scare but rather the fact that they’ll be able to leave their sweaters behind.

National Weather Service forecasters are projecting highs north of 70 degrees on Wednesday and north of 80 degrees on Thursday. The typical high temperature for late October, they say, is in the high 50s.

Boston, Worcester and Springfield are looking at highs of 72, 73 and 75 degrees, respectively on Wednesday. And on Halloween, temperatures will soar another 10 degrees or so, with Boston and Springfield both expected to top 80 degrees.

The record heat comes as the state grapples with a number of brush fires on the North Shore, including in Salem, Saugus and Middleton.

“The dry landscape, warmth, sunshine and increasing winds will further boost the existing wildfire risk in the region,” AccuWeather forecasters wrote.

Most of the Bay State saw some rain overnight Tuesday, but only the northeastern part of the state saw more than a quarter of an inch. There is a chance for more rain early Friday but forecasters say it likely won’t amount to “more than a few brief showers.”

Friday brings the greatest risk of fire weather, with winds gusting between 25 mph and 30 mph.
