Gloucester city officials are warning beachgoers to avoid going near Lion’s Mane jellyfish, which have been spotted at several city beaches this summer.
Lion’s Mane jellyfish have been seen in the outer harbor at Niles Beach, Good Harbor Beach, Half Moon Beach and in nearby areas, city officials said in a Facebook post.
“These jellyfish can deliver painful stings — even after they’ve washed ashore — so please use caution and avoid any jellyfish you may see,” officials wrote.
The city has put in place several measures in the hopes of keeping people safe from the jellyfish. Officials and lifeguards are keeping people out of the water when jellyfish are present, posting the marine hazard flag when significant numbers of jellyfish are spotted and restricting water access or closing beaches entirely when they appear in large numbers.
City staff are monitoring the situation closely and will update the public as needed, officials said.
