Marcelo Mayer gets first MLB hit with family in attendance

Marcelo Mayer is no longer in search of his first Major League Baseball hit.

The Boston Red Sox third baseman hit a line-drive single to left field in the bottom of the second inning against the Baltimore Orioles.

While the first hit is always special, it was made even more so for Mayer because his family was in attendance at Fenway Park. With very little notice prior to his debut on Saturday, they took a red-eye flight from California to get to Boston time for Mayer’s second MLB game.

Mayer received news he had been called up by the Red Sox on Saturday afternoon. He arrived to Polar Park ahead of the Worcester Red Sox’ doubleheader, but was held out of the first game. The prospect was then pulled into WooSox manager Chad Tracy’s office to be told the news.

The infielder’s call up came after Alex Bregman hit the injured listwith what manager Alex Cora called a significant quad injury. Bregman said it’s similar to the injury he suffered during the 2021 season that caused him to miss two months.
