Many demand university leaders comment on Israel-Hamas. Is that right?

With the presidents of three of the nation’s elite universities facing backlash and calls for their resignation after testifying before Congress on Tuesday, students, politicians and alums are turning toward university presidents to not only speak out about campus issues but also political matters.

Frederick Lawrence, the former president of Brandeis University from 2011 to 2015, is one of several academics questioning what role university presidents should have as tensions arise such as the Israel-Hamas war.
