Man who died after being pulled from water at Mass. beach loved the ocean

A 77-year-old man who died after being pulled from the water at a Fairhaven beach last month was remembered in his obituary as a “man of many passions.”

Wayne Silveira died on July 22 after being pulled out of the Nasketucket Bay in Fairhaven. Silveira was unconscious and someone on the beach was attempting CPR when first responders arrived around 5 p.m. that day. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A graduate of New Bedford High School, Silveira served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as an entrepreneur in “various roles” throughout his life, “always bringing dedication and energy to everything he pursued,” according to his obituary.

“Wayne was a man of many passions,” the notice continued.

Silveira, who lived in Acushnet, loved swimming, boating and being out on the water in general. As a high schooler, Silveira was a skilled track athlete. Silveira also enjoyed playing golf, according to the obituary.

But “above all, Wayne cherished time spent with his family and his beloved bird, Kiwi, who was always by his side.”

Visitation for Silveira will be held on Aug. 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rock Funeral Home in New Bedford, with a 5 p.m. service.

In lieu of flowers, Silveira’s family asked donations be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.
