A Brookline man who prosecutors said tricked a woman he was dating into taking abortion pills by telling her they were iron pills will be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court
Robert Kawada, 43, was charged with attempted poisoning, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a pregnant person and assault and battery on a household or family member in November, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
Kawada and the woman were dating when she got pregnant, Ryan said. Once he found out about the pregnancy, Kawada ordered abortion pills Misoprostol and Mifepristone online. He placed the identity of a woman he knew under the order.
Kawada told the woman the medication was iron pills as a way to trick her into taking them, Ryan said. The woman trusted Kawada as his dad was an Obstetrics and Gynecology doctor.
Kawada further deceived her by having someone pose as a nurse from her hospital, instructing her to continue taking the iron pills. She would tell the woman she had low iron levels in recent test results.
Kawada showed up at the woman’s house to talk about the phone call. He then gave her the abortion pills, but the woman thought they were iron pills, Ryan said. The woman had a miscarriage.
