Man rescued by lifeguards, bystanders at Mass. beach

A man was pulled unresponsive from the water off Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester Tuesday afternoon by lifeguards and bystanders, officials said.

First responders were called to the beach around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday. There, they learned an off-duty nurse and several city lifeguards pulled the unresponsive 77-year-old out of the water and began CPR.

Lifeguards and the nurse also applied an automated external defibrillator to the man, administering one shock, said Fire Chief Eric Smith, Police Chief Edward Conley and Department of Public Works Director Michael Hale in a joint statement.

By the time first responders arrived, the man was breathing and responsive on the beach. He was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital and subsequently to the Intensive Care Unit at Beverly Hospital, where he is in stable condition, according to the statement.

Officials identified the lifeguards involved in the rescue are Missy Lohnes and John Dalone.

“An off-duty nurse and our City of Gloucester Lifeguards saved this man’s life,” said Smith, the fire chief, in the statement. “I want to thank them all for their quick, compassionate, and effective response. This patient was already being well cared for when we arrived on scene, and that quick response by those at the beach was critical in ensuring this incident had a positive outcome.”
