Man killed, 2 children hospitalized after car goes off Route 3 in Mass., into river

A man was killed and two children were injured in a rollover car crash in which the vehicle went off Route 3 in Plymouth and into a river Friday afternoon, news outlets reported.

First responders were called to the single-car crash on Route 3 at the Eel River in Plymouth shortly before 5 p.m. Friday. The vehicle went off the southbound lanes of the highway, over a guardrail and into the river, the Plymouth Fire Department said in a statement.

Firefighters had to enter the river and use hydraulic tools to free the driver, a 50-year-old man, from the car. The effort took roughly 20 minutes, according to the department’s statement.

He was flown to a Boston trauma center by a medical helicopter, the statement said. The man, who was from Plymouth, was pronounced dead at the facility, WCVB reported.

Two children, a 9-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl, were also in the car and injured, according to the department. They were driven to nearby hospitals by ambulance. Their injuries are serious, WCVB reported.

The crash is under investigation by state police, the department stated. State police said it is unclear why the car went off the highway, WCVB reported.
