A 26-year-old Lowell man was sentenced to jail after taking a gold chain necklace from the ground that once belonged to a man killed by an MBTA trolly.
In May 2023, a 30-year-old man missed boarding a trolley at the MBTA’s North Station. As it was departing the station, he kicked the side of the trolley, according to police.
“At this point the male lost his balance and fell under the trolley as it was in motion departing the station,” police said in a statement.
The man’s shirt was caught alongside the trailing trolley, and the man was dragged for about 200 feet.
Surveillance video showed Christopher Polanco pick up an unidentified object from the yellow warning surface of the platform and place the item in the left side pocket of his shorts, according to officials. Polanco appeared to look around while he secured the item in his pocket.
The item was later determined to be a gold chain necklace that the 30-year-old man was seen wearing on video before being struck.
A BMC Central jury on Monday convicted Polanco on one count of larceny under $1,200. He was sentenced to serve six months in the House of Correction.
“I hope this victim’s family can derive some solace from the jury’s verdict regarding this defendant’s actions, which injected additional sorrow into an already tragic situation,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.
