Man found lying in road near Mass. gas station believed to be victim of hit-and-run

A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near a gas station on Route 44 in Dighton Thursday evening, and police are asking for the public’s help locating anyone who may have been involved in the crash.

An off-duty police officer traveling on Route 44 around 10 p.m. Thursday saw a man lying in the road near the Gulf gas station on Winthrop Street, Police Chief George Nichols said in a statement. The officer immediately called for assistance and the man was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known as of Thursday evening.

Police believe the man was walking alongside Route 44 heading west when he was struck, Nichols said.

The department is “possibly seeking” a Toyota of “an unknown year or model” in connection with the crash, Nichols said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Dighton Police at 508-669-6711.
