After winning three state titles at Malden Catholic, the school announced Wednesday that boys basketball head coach John Walsh is stepping down two days before the Lancers’ season opener.
Walsh, who was hired by his alma mater in 2020 after three years coaching at Central Catholic, also reached a state final to go with his three championships. This past season, Malden Catholic fell to Somerset Berkley in the MIAA Division II final. The program won three D-II crowns in a row from 2022-24.
Malden Catholic is scheduled to open its 2025-26 season on Friday against Burncoat.
“We are sincerely grateful for his leadership and dedication over the past five seasons,” the school said in a statement.
Assistant coach Mark Garrity will be elevated to the head coaching position, according to the school’s statement.
“His experience, leadership, and familiarity with the program position him well to lead the team into the upcoming season,” the school said of Garrity.
