Most Middleborough residents were without power Tuesday evening amid record-breaking high temperatures that reached up to 100 degrees in some parts of the state.
Middleborough Gas and Electric notified town officials of a significant power outage affecting a majority of electric customers around 5 p.m., town officials said in a press release. The town’s power department did not have an estimated time at which it expected electricity to be restored, Town Manager Jay McGrail said in the release.
The town is using Nichols Middle School at 112 Tiger Drive as a cooling center in response to the outage, town officials said. Anyone who needs to get out of the heat is encouraged to go there, and pets are welcome as well.
The Middleborough Public Library at 102 North Main St. will also remain open until 11 p.m. Tuesday to serve as a second cooling center, town officials said. Pets are not allowed in the library.
By 8 p.m. Tuesday night, the temperature in Middleborough was still 87 degrees, according to Google Weather. Nearly 25,000 people live in the Southeastern Massachusetts town as of July 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
As of 8:15 p.m., over 10,000 electric customers in Massachusetts were without power throughout the state, according to the state’s power outage map. Millbury also appeared to be experiencing a significant power outage that was affecting nearly a quarter of the town’s electric customers.
The hot weather is expected to continue on Wednesday, with high temperatures across Massachusetts reaching into the 90s, according to the National Weather Service.
