Mac Jones finished Patriots camp on a high note despite pass rush issues

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots held their 18th and final open practice of the offseason on Wednesday. This day of camp gave us our last glimpse of the Patriots until they take on the Tennessee Titans in their preseason finale and ultimately start the 2023 NFL season.

After this day, the team will close its door to the media and truly begin preparations for the regular season.

On Wednesday, Mac Jones finished a strong summer with another strong day against the defense. The Patriots quarterback has continued to make strides this offseason and that was seen on this day. Of course, we also saw the Patriots pass protection have issues and that’s been another common theme this summer.

Jones finished his last day of training camp completing 78% of his passes, going 18-of-23 against the Patriots defense. The quarterback had an ultra-quick release on Wednesday that was noteworthy. That was certainly needed as Jones would’ve likely been sacked six times.

The good news for the Patriots is that Michael Onwenu returned to practice and is coming off the physically unable to perform list. The right guard wasn’t a full participant, but his return would be big (along with the potential return of left guard Cole Strange, who’s been out with a lower-body issue).

Other than the pass rush, Jones didn’t have many problems in this practice. He started the day going 6-of-8 with two nice throws to Kendrick Bourne. Jones was on fire in the next period, completing 7-of-8 passes in the red zone. He ended this drill with a nice quick pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster for a touchdown and followed it up with a touchdown to DeVante Parker. Parker jumped over Christian Gonzalez and Myles Bryant for the score.

Jones ended his day with an efficient 2-minute drill, going 5-of-7. This period started with back-to-back completions to Hunter Henry to move the offense across midfield. After hitting DeVante Parker, Jones threw a touchdown to Kayshon Boutte in the back of the end zone. The rookie beat Bryant for the touchdown.

The pass rush was an issue for the Patriots offensive line, but Jones was efficient in his reads on Wednesday and ended training camp on a high note. He hit eight different players in this practice, including three passes to each of Bourne, Smith-Schuster, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Parker.

Bailey Zappe completed 65% of his passes on the day, going 11-of-17 on the day. Zappe had some solid moments amidst some inconsistency with his group. His favorite target on the day was Boutte, who finished with three catches on this unit. Zappe hit Boutte for a touchdown to end his first 11-on-11 period.

Zappe also had a nice touchdown throw to Thyrick Pitts. Pitts jumped over Marte Mapu for the score and that marked his second touchdown in the final two open practices of the summer.

Malik Cunningham mainly played receiver on Tuesday. He also took two snaps in 11-on-11 at quarterback and he kept with the ball on both plays.

Trace McSorley ended the day going 3-of-4 in one brief 11-on-11 period.
