Longtime Mass. firefighter to be mourned at funeral next week

The family of a long-time Gloucester firefighter who died unexpectedly this week on Thursday announced funeral arrangements to honor his life.

Sander Schultz, 57, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Mayor Greg Verga and Fire Chief Eric Smith said in a joint statement. A 26-year veteran of the department, Schultz served as EMS coordinator for “many years” before he became the driver of Engine 2 in West Gloucester.

Schultz’s funeral will be held at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish on Prospect Street in Gloucester at 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, according to a statement from Verga and Smith. The Gloucester Fire Department asked that no out-of-town fire apparatus be brought to the funeral services for Schultz due to limited parking.

The fire department asked all off-duty uniformed personnel in attendance to wear Class A uniforms. All uniformed personnel are asked to arrive at the church at 11:25 a.m. to form up out front. A walkthrough of uniformed personnel will be held at 11:45 a.m., according to the statement.

Flags in the North Shore community remain at half-staff to honor Schultz’s decades of service.

“The Gloucester Fire Department continues to ask that the family’s privacy to be respected during this difficult time,” the statement said.
