Emersynn Cage dropped 32 points, including the 1,000th of her career Friday night to fuel Longmeadow to a 69-62 victory against South Hadley.
It was the first time since 2008 a Longmeadow girls basketball player has reached 1,000 points in their career.
“I think that says a lot about how unique this is, how special this is and how proud we are for that accomplishment,” said Longmeadow coach Tim Allen. “It also should be noted that she did this before the halfway mark of her senior year, and she missed half of her sophomore year with an ACL. So essentially, she has scored 1,000 points in three total years.”
Cage’s 1,000th career point came in the third quarter in front of her home crowd. It was just one part of a massive scoring night for the senior who hit five triples.
“It means a lot definitely a high milestone and it hasn’t been done for a while, so it sounds good,” Cage said. “I knew I was 25 away. I didn’t think I was going to get it today, but I made my first two shots, and I knew I was going to make it today.”
Hitting the milestone just eight games in, Cage said there’s some relief in not having to wait for it the rest of the way.
“I think it definitely takes a lot more pressure off me because I was still worried about it to begin with,” Cage said.
Cage and Longmeadow will be looking to continue their winning ways this Monday Jan. 12 when they will take on Holyoke at 7 p.m. at home.
