Long list of Red Sox roster moves includes RHP to Cubs, Reese McGuire update

As they resumed play after an off day Thursday, the Red Sox took care of some roster-related business off the field, too.

Before their series opener in Texas, the Red Sox activated new reliever Luis García and optioned left-handed reliever Bailey Horn back to Triple-A Worcester. The club also closed the loop on five players it designated for assignment around the trade deadline.

According to the team, right-hander Chase Anderson and left-hander Brandon Walter were both released. Reliever Trey Wingenter, who was DFA after just two appearances with the Red Sox, was claimed off waivers by the Cubs. Catcher Reese McGuire and Yohan Ramírez both cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Worcester.

It comes as little surprise that McGuire and Anderson, who spent the entire season on the big league roster before being designated Saturday as part of a roster shuffle, were not claimed by other teams after poor showings in the bigs this season. Anderson had enough service time to decline a Triple-A assignment and hit the open market. McGuire appears ticketed for Triple-A where he’ll serve as a depth option behind Connor Wong and Danny Jansen (who took his spot in the majors). McGuire is no longer on the 40-man roster.

Ramírez allowed three runs (two earned) in his Red Sox debut Tuesday night against Seattle after Boston claimed him from the Dodgers last weekend. He’s on his fourth team of the year and will provide depth at Triple-A. Wingenter surrendered seven runs on five hits in two games in a Sox uniform after being acquired in a minor trade in mid-July. He was DFA on Tuesday.

The Walter situation is a bit more curious. The 27-year-old, who emerged as one of Boston’s top pitching prospects a couple years ago despite being a 26th-round pick out of Delaware in the 2019 draft, has been out all season with a left rotator cuff strain and according to an industry source, is not close to returning to pitching. The Sox could have put him on the 60-day injured list (which would mean he’d be off the 40-man roster) but chose instead to cut him loose. He was designated for assignment on deadline day.

The Red Sox have a full 40-man roster after adding Jansen, García, Lucas Sims, James Paxton and Quinn Priester ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
