Local Farmer Awards, Shared Investment, Local Impact 2025 Program Summary

Agawam – The Local Farmer Awards program proudly marks its 11th year with a record-breaking investment in the region’s agricultural sector. In 2025, 116 farms across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties received grants to support essential infrastructure, equipment, and sustainable farming practices.

This year’s funding was made possible through the partnership of the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation, Big Y, the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, and the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation, along with 15 generous community funders. In total, the Local Farmer Awards has invested more than $1.78 million in local farms since the program’s inception — helping 321 individual farms complete 788 capital improvement projects.

Farmers used their 2025 grants to implement a wide variety of improvements, such as: Infrastructure & Equipment: Storage, trailers, and barns; Water Systems: Irrigation pumps, tanks, solar-powered systems; Greenhouse Automation: Climate control and ventilation; Crop Production Tools: Planters, weeders, and soil health tools; Animal Care: Housing, fencing, and handling systems; Fruit & Perennials: Harvesting and pruning tools; Maple Production: Sap extraction and processing; Food Safety: Washing, processing, and storage facilities; Tech & Monitoring: Climate stations, sensors, and smart systems.

The funded projects reflect the diversity and innovation of farms across the region — from newer startups to established multi-generational businesses, and from vegetable and fruit producers to dairy, maple, and livestock farms.

Program Impact by the Numbers: 116 farms awarded in 2025 (from 207 applicants, including 15 first-time recipients); $535,426 total project investment in 2025 (including $267,850 in grant funds and $267,576 contributed by farmers themselves); Farm contribution averaged nearly 50% of total project costs — demonstrating deep commitment and resourcefulness.

Projects supported across all four Western Mass counties: Franklin County: 37%; Hampshire County: 32%; Berkshire County: 21%; Hampden County: 10%.
