Letter from the President: The case for hope and leadership during difficult times

The first guest I met at our MassLive Tech Breakfast in Harvard Square said that they normally wouldn’t get up for an early morning gathering, but that Scott Kirsner was worth it.

He wasn’t the only one. About thirty guests joined me and Scott (MassLive’s Innovation Columnist) for a breakfast conversation about innovation and economic development.

It was an impressive group of C-suite executives, top administrators from schools around the region, as well as top government officials. The conversation spanned an array of topics from tariffs to entrepreneurship.

I’ll be honest. I thought I would leave the event depressed. Instead, I left feeling inspired and uplifted. That’s because one of the major themes of the morning was how Massachusetts can be leader even during these challenging times.

The group pushed one another to think about ways that we can reimagine higher education, ensure greater economic opportunity for a broader swath of people, and use our deep smarts with tech to ensure that we’re building a stronger Commonwealth for all.

The morning reminded of just how powerful we can be when we come together to imagine a brighter future —even during difficult moments. I needed this jolt of positivity. It also showed me that the news, which is at the heart of MassLive’s mission, can be an impetus for change.

Enjoy the photos, and thanks to everyone for participating in our conversation.

Sincerely,

Joshua Macht
