Leader of Amherst’s alternative-to-police agency under investigation; no reason given

AMHERST — Earl Miller, the municipality’s first director of Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS), designed as an alternative to some police functions in this town of 40,000, is under investigation, according to a statement from Town Manager Paul Bockelman’s office.

The statement said Miller is currently on paid administrative leave, while the probe is underway, and that Bockelman “has full confidence in the (CRESS) program and its members.”

The statement did not explain nature of the investigation, saying it involves “an internal investigation into the operation of the CRESS program” and said: “Because this is an internal personnel matter the Town will not be making any further comment.”
