Lawn chemicals poison beauties of nature, threaten human health (Letter)

Spring is here. Time to get outside and enjoy our lawns and gardens again. This year, could we rethink adding more poisons to our world?

There are many good reasons not to use lawn chemicals in the spaces that surround us. Pesticide exposure elevates the risk of birth defects, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to this damage. Our pets can absorb the chemicals through their paws.

Wild bees, butterflies, and other pollinators numbers are on the decline from pesticide use. When lawn chemicals run off or leach into soils, they contaminate the water everyone needs and uses. This leads to damaged aquatic life, dangerous algae blooms, and extra cost for municipal water treatment systems.
