Lane closure on I-90 near Worcester slows traffic during Thursday evening communte

The right-hand lane of I-90 east in Charlton closed late in the day on Thursday for emergency roadwork, slowing traffic during the evening commute.

The roadwork on the Mass. Pike is set to continue through the night on Friday, but the lane is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m., the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) said in a press release. MassDOT advises that drivers seek alternative routes and avoid the area if possible during the lane closure.

Real-time traffic monitoring on mass511.com showed that traffic was slowed on both I-90 and I-84 in Sturbridge as of 8 p.m.

The emergency roadwork follows a week during which three tractor-trailers crashed on the Mass. Pike east in Charlton. The first crash happened Monday afternoon, the second occurred early Wednesday morning and the third happened Thursday morning.

MassDOT advises following its social media account for the latest updates on road and lane closures and checking mass511.com for real-time traffic updates.
