Lakeville PD to release body cam footage after shooting suspect is charged, chief says

At a press conference on Friday, Lakeville Chief Matthew Perkins said that body camera footage of a shooting between one man, a police officer and an off-duty Massachusetts Police State trooper is expected to be released after the suspect is charged and arraigned.

The shooting happened at around 4 a.m. on Precinct Street. Perkins said a man, someone known to police, exited a car and approached a Lakeville officer who was watching traffic with what looked like a gun in hand. As the man approached, the officer turned on his body camera, Perkins said.

The off-duty trooper saw the officer with his gun drawn and stepped in before the man “took an aggressive stance and raised the weapon,” NBC Boston reported. The officer and trooper made “multiple commands” to the man to drop the gun before they both opened fire, Perkins said. It’s unclear if the officer, the trooper or both struck the man.

A weapon belonging to the man was recovered, officials said. After he was shot, he was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford for emergency treatment. Neither police officer was injured and their names have not been released.

“I believe (the officer) did a good job, when we reviewed the body camera footage,” Perkins said. “I have seen it and it’ll speak for itself.”

Details about the firearm were not specified, but Perkins said the gun recovered could be a replica gun and “unknown if it could fire any projectile at this point.”

The man, who has not been identified, is “expected to live,” Perkins said. He said he didn’t know when the shooter would be charged or arraigned, but that body camera footage of the incident would be released when that happens. A date for the arraignment has not been announced.
