A GoFundMe is raising money for the funeral of a former foster youth shot in Springfield Monday.
Daniel Romero, 21, of Springfield, died after he was shot in Marengo Park, the Hampden District Attorney’s office said Wednesday in an email.
Around 10:45 a.m. Monday, officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to a report of a man who was shot near the 100 block of Marengo Park, the Hampden District Attorney’s office said.
Officers found Romero with a gunshot wound and he was taken to Baystate Medical Center. He later died, the Hampden District Attorney’s office said.
Romero is remembered as “Springfield’s favorite redhead” in the GoFundMe. It is organized by Saranaya Lovey, who said because he is a former foster youth, it’s just her and her parents taking financial responsibility for his funeral.
“Any little thing helps,” she wrote. “We just want to give him a good send-off.”
The GoFundMe has raised $3,235 of the $5,000 goal as of Friday morning.
He was remembered as being “kind and warm-hearted.”
Others posted memories of Romero on social media.
“… words can’t even tell you how much it hurts knowing I will no longer be able to see this kid’s face or hear his voice,” Stephanie King wrote on Facebook. “He was too kind and definitely had your back if you needed him to so please have his back when he needs it the most.”
